 : The only tip is PRACTISE. Practise and practise over on this language is useful. You could hear the Chinese on a Chinese speaking drama, a Chinese movie. Make friend with a Chinese is good for practise too.
Remember you are never late or difficult learning a new thing. Just make sure you work hard on it and practise over it. Like school boy studying hard at their school.
Of course you have to cover interesting in it once you want to start and keep it on.

I am a Chinese and I came from Hong kong. I know there are some foreigners here who know Chinese very well. My former teacher he watched a lots of Hong Kong movies when he first reached Hong Kong. He speaked Cantonese with us and told us that his Cantonese teacher were "those movies". ( Here in Hong kong, we speak Cantonese. )But no matter what, just like playing the piano or singing a song, what you need is just practise. Hope it helps.
