But learning to read and write is still like learning a new language, being able to speak will only make it easier to learn because you know the syntax. But characters can almost be harder than speaking. Just because you're Chinese doesn't mean it will be easier for you.
OK. So you want to learn to read and write Chinese. Get some primers for reading and writing from a local Chinese book store and then get some children's books with Han Yu Pin Yin so you will learn to recognize the characters and understand what they are saying from the Pin Yin. This will probably be the fastest way. Plus you will learn to recognize much faster than you will learn to write. Writing takes recall and it is not uncommon for native Chinese speakers to forget how to write some of the simplest characters at times and even ask non-Chinese Chinese speakers how to write them.
